Keys to happiness

Keys to happiness

What are the keys to happiness?

Happiness is what we all want in our lives. But sometimes we are so busy dealing with the problems of life that we forget to be happy and enjoy it. If you feel this way, the keys of happiness can help you be happy and satisfied in life. Certain things can make someone feel happy; these are called keys to happiness.

What would be your answer if I ask you, what is happiness? You might not be able to give a simple answer. Still, you want to know about the keys to happiness. Let me tell you one thing there is nothing like a universal key to happiness. But this does not mean you should stop looking for happiness. If you take care of little things, you can be happy in life.

This article is all about keys to happiness, how you can find happiness in little things and make your life better. So, let’s get started:

Keys to happiness psychology

Keys to happiness psychology revolve around how you define happiness. What does it mean by finding happiness to you? You may not have given it a thought lately, but it is really difficult to define it. Here is an example that can perfectly explain what I am saying:

An hour ago, I was drinking a cup of tea while watching my favourite movie. Was I happy at that time? Yes, I was feeling quite happy at that time. Why? Because:

  • I had nothing to worry about
  • My basic needs were fulfilled.
  • My friends and family members all are satisfied and happy in their lives.
  • The weather was nice too.
  • I was thinking about going for a walk after a while

I was really happy because of all these things. If we keep these things in mind, for me, the definition of happiness is:

“Happiness is when I am stress-free enjoying a cup of tea on a nice day, knowing that everyone I love is happy and satisfied with their lives”.

So now, I have an idea of what are my keys to happiness in life. I know enough to make myself feel happy in life. But it is not true those few things which I am happy about now may not be enough in future I may need something else.

Keys to happiness psychology suggest that the definition of happiness for everyone will change after a while as people change with time. If you think that you can rely on a single thing, you are wrong.

What is the true key to happiness?

What is the true key to happiness? Well, I have mentioned above that a single thing cannot be considered the true key to happiness. So how can someone find out what makes them happy? Here are a few things that you need to do if you want to know what is the true key to happiness for you?

Define your happiness

You need to figure out what happiness means to you. Think about the last month or week and consider things that positively affect you and make you feel better about yourself. What things did influence you significantly?

Was it a good series you watched or a movie? Was it spending time with your family members or friends? Did you attend an exciting music concert? Or was it a bright sunny day that you enjoyed with a nice cup of coffee? Was it meeting your targets at work? It could be anything.

You need to realize that all of these things are a part of your own keys to happiness. You can define your happiness with these things, but it is just a little part of that. If you keep track of things that make you happy every week, it will be easy for you to figure out the true happiness factors in your life.

Know the purpose of your life

Now you need to identify things that give you purpose in life. If you live your life to achieve a goal, it will make you feel happy, and your life will be fulfilling. If you consider the previously mentioned example, will you be happy if your focus will be on a carefree and relaxed feeling? Obviously not, as it will not make our life fulfilling. At least it is not the case for me.

Aside from things that make you feel happy daily, there should be a bigger goal that makes you able to follow a specific direction and make your life fulfilling, like building your own company, etc.

So you need to figure out what is your purpose in life. This is only possible if you try different things every now and then and step out of your comfort zone. Your life purpose should be challenging; this way, you can figure out what is your passion and what makes you happy.

Combine your definition of happiness and life purpose

Purpose in your life plays a really important role. It should be fun achieving this goal.  But should you sacrifice everything to achieve this goal? Should you work the whole day and take no break from it? Should you forget about important relationships and just focus on the main goal and sleep under stress with the help of medication.

No, that is not the right thing to do. Peace of mind is really important, and it will not come without balance. This way, you may achieve your goal, but you might not feel happy about it. It is just the same as if you spend your whole life like you spend your last week, you will be able to remain happy for a long time. It will become your normal routine with no ultimate life goal.

It is said that:

“Happiness is a journey, not a destination”.

There will be no journey if there is no destination, and happiness is a product of both. So it is like a work in progress. Align your definition of happiness with your purpose in life so that you can be happy in your life.

Keys to happiness in life

Many little things can help you live a happy life only if you are willing to take care of these things. Keys to happiness in life are various; here, I will share a few with you that connects you with your inside and outside world.

Seven keys to happiness

Before you look outside the world to feel happiness, you must be happy and satisfied from the inside. If you do not feel comfortable and you are not satisfied in your heart, nothing can do wonders for you. Here are seven keys to happiness that come from your inside you:

Have goals in life

Having a positive outlook on what’s to come is significant for our joy. We, as a whole, need a purpose in life so that we can feel motivated. These goals must be challenging so that we can feel excited but should also be achievable. If we attempt to achieve something impossible, this brings superfluous pressure. Picking ambitious, however, practical goals provides our lives guidance and brings a feeling of achievement and fulfilment when we accomplish them.

Find ways to deal with your stress.

We all have to face trauma, loss, stress and failure at some point in our lives. Be that as it may, how we react to these immensely affects our personality. We frequently can’t pick what befalls us, yet we can pick how we should react to a situation. Practically it is not that easy, but recent findings suggests that resilience can prove helpful in this regard. Just like other skills and abilities, we can also learn this. A professional mental health service provider can also help in this regard.

Look for better things.

It is one of the most important things among the seven keys to happiness. Positive feelings, like happiness, appreciation, satisfaction, pride and inspiration, are not only incredible at that point. A recent finding shows that consistently encountering them makes an ‘upward twisting’, assisting with building up our resources. So despite the fact that we should be realistic about good and bad days in life, it helps in focusing on the good things of any circumstance we are faced with.

Accept yourself

Nobody’s ideal. We know who we are from inside; still, we compare ourselves with others outside; we don’t even know who they are from inside. Regretting and despising ourselves over our faults, focusing on what we’re not instead of what we have, makes it a lot harder to be glad. Figuring out how to acknowledge ourselves, imperfections and everything, and being kinder to ourselves when things turn out badly builds our delight throughout everyday life, our strength and our personality. It additionally encourages us to acknowledge others as they are and accept them.

Be a part of bigger things.

Individuals who have purpose or meaning in their lives are more joyful, feel more in charge and get more out of what they do. They likewise experience less pressure, nervousness and misery. But where can one can find “purpose or meaning”? It very well may be our religious belief, being a parent or doing a task that affects emotions positively. The appropriate responses differ for everyone; however, they all include being associated with an option that could be greater than ourselves.

Use your talent

You might have a talent or a skill that you think you are wasting. Find a way to use it. Research had shown that when employees were asked to pick a task in which they can show their strength, they felt more joyful. You might be good at painting, spend your free time doing this, and you can also make money out of it by selling your paintings.

Writing journal

Writing a journal can prove helpful in getting rid of negative thoughts. We cannot be happy all the time; there are moments when we feel down. That’s when writing can help you. You can overcome your emotional issues by writing and will feel happier, as the research by the University of California in Los Angeles suggests. Transferring your thoughts on paper, whether in the form of a poem, song, or a diary entry, can help in controlling the intensity of emotions.
