Most individuals are rationally aware of this, and they recognize that having expectations isn’t always warranted. Despite this, we have specific expectations for almost every situation. These expectations can be intentional and controlled, or they can be instinctive and set subconsciously.

In truth, much of what we think is automatic. Expectations, stereotypes, and judgments are cognitive shortcuts that serve a useful purpose: they allow us to save processing capacity so that we can do more.

Consider what it would be like if you had to think about everything you did and everyone you meet in a single day. Because all of your time and cognitive resources are consumed by pondering, you’d probably never get around to doing most of them.

We have the right to have expectations and expectation quotes, but no one is obligated to meet them. Others may have expectations of you, but it is entirely up to you whether or not you choose to meet them.
